New Left Media

Woot for Chase Whiteside (interviews) and Erick Stoll (camera).

These are two guys are doing something so constructive. This is the NEW LEFT MEDIA. This is what people want to see. After reading their blog, which can be found here, it's evident that these guys are raw and real. They aren't asking for anything except to share their videos and letting people come to their own conclusions.

It's so refreshing to watch a video on YouTube that doesn't involve a cat doing dog tricks or some lame spoof.

Although these two videos comprise the same format, the message is very different. I strongly suggest watching these.

There are so many implications on so many different levels here.

Social media is a delicate tool. It's still so new and amazing that we haven't collectively taken a step back to see the big picture. How will this affect us? How will these video's affect people around the world? How easily can these videos be toyed with to promote a certain angle?

Social media is a great tool to help people become informed, but how can we guarantee the quality of the message?

  1. Wow, so....I guess in terms of social media, a message that could be taken from this is that there is an abundance of information now made readily available to anyone with internet access, but not all that information is quality on truthful information.

When watching these videos my initial reactions were:
a- wow the republicans have alot of dumb dumb support, god-fearing, imigrant-hating, anti-abortion, dumb dumb support. The individuals who were being interview in the first video clearly were in support of Palin for her personality, because nobody seemed to actually know what policies she was in support of or opposed to and the reasoning behind it. The individuals being interviewed came off like a bunch of ignorant rednecks.

b-That the gay rights movement has alot of support, some educated leaders and followers, and that they all expect to see that the president they all voted for fulfills the promises he made in terms of gay rights.

Now - perhaps these were my initial reactions because I am a liberal Canadian who is in full support of equal rights for all and kind of thinks that those who are opposed to universal healthcare are ridiculous - BUT - the point is that no matter what my beliefs and opinions are, the internet provides unlimited access to information to reaffirm these notions.

It is important that we all remain objective and unbiased when using social media outlets as information resources, because it's all to easy to develop a nasty case of tunnel vision and only hear what we want to hear.

Critical thinking is more essential than ever because you CAN'T believe everything you see on TV, on the internet, in newspapers, or even on the news - documents, videos, and pictures can all be doctored, and not all sources are as reputable as we may originally assume. So beware the youtube videos that prove you right, because there's always one available that's just as convincing, that will prove you wrong.
